Last week Minister Oduber paid a working visit to the Netherlands. The director of Monument Fund Foundation Aruba (SMFA) traveled with the ministerial group. Aim for SMFA was a further deepening of relations with the Netherlands. In the vision of Aruba Culture is an important pillar for tourism. This message is conveyed in the Netherlands and was received very positively.
During this week we had conversations with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) about monuments. Several years ago, the Netherlands had issued a total of 8 million euro revolving low-interest loan to the islands. These loans make it possible to carry out projects that would otherwise be impossible because the local interest rate is relatively high. This arrangement is implemented to Aruba by the National Restoration (NRF) in the Netherlands and the SMFA. Aruba has received two tranches of 750,000 € each, with which the water towers of Oranjestad and San Nicolas were restored. For the ‘non-restoration’ part of these projects SMFA has a loan from the bank. On both projects is a part of the loan over, and this will be used for restoration of California Lighthouse. Last year the arrangement was evaluated and Aruba has received an additional loan of € 500,000. This will be used to restore the Nicolaas Store. To conclude the talks with OCW, a meeting was held with Minister Jet Bussemaker. She confirmed to SMFA that the arrangement will expire at the end 2014 and will be evaluated again in 2015.
Even at the municipal level (with the municipality of Amsterdam) were the contacts expanded. The Monuments and Archaeology office has offered to help Aruba with the further development of conservation knowledge and information and also manpower. The cooperation will be further formalized by in the form of an agreement between Aruba and the municipality of Amsterdam.
In the area of fund raising and investors there was contact with the Mondriaan Foundation and National Restoration Fund. Both funds were impressed by the developments in Aruba and the ambitions and plans in the field of the development of monuments, culture and tourism. Cooperation with the NRF will be further enhanced with an educational project.
Finally, there have also been visits to Hermitage on the Amstel an organization of museums in Amsterdam. The Hermitage would like to share their knowledge and experience for the various museums that are under development in Aruba. They would like to share their knowledge about the contents and the facilities, such as building, climate and security.
SMFA remains committed to preserving our past for the future. SMFA owns a number of monuments such as the Town Hall, Censo, Henriquez building and Wild House on Schelpstraat and Yellow house on West Street next to the bus station. The Limekiln and water tank in Rancho, Gold Mill Bushiribana and the commander dig into seru Patrishi and Hato are managed by the SMFA.
SMFA is financially independent and also completely dependent on investors, sponsors and donors. We are currently working on the restoration of Nicolaas Store in San Nicolas and in addition we have a number of projects in preparation, such as California Lighthouse. We also organize activities aimed at raising awareness of our cultural heritage for both residents and visitors of Aruba.
On Facebook, we will keep you informed of our activities.
