Hart House
Category: Oranjestad
Across from the fort, on the corner of Zoutmanstraat and Oranjestraat, a small house may attract your attention.
It dates back to the 19th century and belonged to J. L Hart, a trader. The oldest picture ever made on Aruba, in 1885, features this small house, next to the fort and the tower, on a barren cliff, without any other buildings around it.
Despite the prohibition against building houses near the fort, this house was built at 30 paces from Fort Zoutman.
This quaint and small cunucu house is of great importance due to its historic value and location. The combination of this property, Fort Zoutman, the Willem III tower and Hotel Colombia forms the heart of Oranjestad’s historical district.
‘Huisje Hart’, as it is called, has been restored and houses a restaurant.
