Pepe Margo Distillery * 1900
Category: Oranjestad
As you walk along Wilhelminastreet, you will notice several old houses, most of them more than a century old and in a dire state of repair. But one of those, next to the Mario Arends building, has been beautifully restored. It has been named the Pepe Margo building after the grandmother of the current owner and it houses a state-of-the-art distillery for gin and rum and other spirits.
On its website it says: “Our distillery combines traditional distillation techniques with Margo’s creative flair. Our custom-built copper still produces unique and exceptional spirits, honoring the remarkable history of the house and celebrating Margo’s enduring influence.”
Pepe Margo was the nickname of Catarina Margarita Wever; people knew her as Margo as well as Pepe Margo. Pepe means godmother in Papiamento. In her day she was famous for her awe-inspiring culinary talents, especially for her cookies and cakes. Her home was an open house for everyone with a sweet tooth, kids as well as grown-ups.
At the back of the building, her husband Dominico Wever had his printing shop ‘General Printing’, on Zuidstraat.
You can tour the premises of Pepe Margo and taste and buy the distillery’s spirits as a souvenir of your tour of this unique distillery on Aruba. Cheers!
