Dr. Horacio Oduber’s house * 1900s

Category: Monuments Lost
Address: Wilhelminastraat 1
Year Built: 1900s
Monument status: demolished
Ownership: private

At the beginning of Wilhelminastraat stood an impressive mansion, belonging to the island’s first doctor, Horacio Eulogio Oduber. He was the first government doctor. The building stood next to the small protestant church, built in 1846.

In the doctor’s house, patients were received and treated for their illnesses or wounds. Not only at the doctor’s house, but also at the houses next door, belonging to the Oduber family members as well.

Even amputations were done there. As medical science was still in its infancy at the time, patients had to be brought under the influence of alcoholic drinks, to mitigate the pain of such an operation.

When dr. Oduber left to continue working on Curaçao in 1931, the house was used as ‘Pasanggrahan’, accommodation for visiting government officials.

The building was demolished in 1949 to make space for the new, large Protestant church, next to the small one from 1846.
