S.N. Ecury’s Roofgarden building * 1927
Category: Monuments Lost
S.N. Ecury (known as ‘Dundun’) was a prominent businessman in the first half of the previous century. He owned two of the most beautiful mansions on the island, the Green House and the White House on Schelpstraat. He was Consul-General of Haiti and Italy and dealer of Ford automobiles, among others.
In Oranjestad’s main street Nassaustraat (now Caya Betico Croes), he had a two-story building, a real landmark. Downstairs he sold car parts, like Goodrich tires.
Upstairs there was the Roofgarden, a “Recreation Saloon”, accessed by an impressive flight of stairs on the outside.
The building disappeared from sight when it was covered by a modern facade decades ago, but the roofgarden windows became visible again some years ago when part of the facade that covered them was removed.
So was the logo of the original shop.
