Adriaan Laclé’s Merchant’s House * 1900s
Category: Oranjestad
This merchant’s house is combined shop and home complex. Adriaan Laclé, businessman and land owner, had it built in the first half of the 20st century.
The shops and work places were on the ground floor. They were accessed by five doors with round arches. On the top floor was the owner’s residence, with five similar windows, with round arches. The residence was accessed by way of a grand staircase, the building’s main feature.
Over time, this building was enlarged by other houses, homes where younger generations lived, all on the same terrain, owned by Adriaan Laclé & family. This way it became a complex for several generations, the younger ones living behind their parents and grand-parents. Other buildings in this distinguished merchant’s quarter – at the time – belonged to Adriaan Laclé, like the shop at the intersection Steenweg/Oude Schoolstraat/ Nieuwstraat and the Amador Laclé mansion on Steenweg, across Botica Aruba.
