Category: Monuments Lost
Location: Palm Beach
Built: 1941-’42
Status: demolished

The Aruba Country Club, a community center organized by the Jewish population of the island, was opened August 30, 1942. It was located near Palm Beach in a grove of hundreds of coconut palms It had a dance floor, a bar, a library, billiard tables, and a playground for children.

During World War II, when Dutch and American soldiers came to defend the island, it became a home base for these young men, among which Jewish-Americans.

Before a synagogue was built in Oranjestad (1962), religious events, such as bar mitzvahs, were also held there for the local Jewish community. But other non-religious organizations also used the club for their functions, like the picnics of the Lions Club and the local jamborees by the Aruban scouts.

When the building was used less and less in the 1960s, it fell into disrepair. It was torn down and replaced by new tourist developments in the 1970s.
